Fertility, Pregnancy and Labor

Becoming a parent is a wonderful calling. When difficulty arises, individuals often feel socially isolated, internalize the stress, and feel challenged personally. Our goal is your success. Eastern medicine has an extensive documented history of helping women and men with the underlying conditions inhibiting pregnancy. We see clients get the best results when our therapies are combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle for at least four months prior to conception.

We work with couples wanting to conceive through various approaches: naturally, with the help of fertility medications, Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Polycystic ovaries, menstrual irregularity, hormone/thyroid imbalance, fibroids, endometriosis, poor ovarian or sperm quality, and immunity can be greatly improved with our approach. Women who have been pregnant then miscarried benefit from our treatments as well. When your body is brought into a better state of balance, even if some of these chronic conditions persist, you have a greater chance of having a healthy pregnancy and child. It is our clinical experience that our services are beneficial for all approaches. Below are some of the ways Chinese Medicine can benefit women and men:

  • Healthy you = healthy baby : )
  • Regulation of women’s hormonal cycle
  • Improved menstrual flow
  • Regulation of ovulation
  • Improved environment of fallopian tubes
  • Improvement of embryo implantation
  • Greater ease in managing mental and emotional stress
  • Improvement of ovarian/sperm function and quality
  • Increased uterine blood flow and improved uterine lining

Acupuncture is helpful with the following: Anxiety/fear/depression, headaches, sinus problems, nausea/digestive problems, spotting/bleeding, fatigue, placenta previa, threatened miscarriage, pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, gestational diabetes, hypertension, edema, thrush, breech or posterior presentation.

Labor Preparation

From week 36 on, acupuncture can help prepare moms for the transition into labor. Pre-birth treatments at this time gently facilitate the gradual, natural onset of labor, and nurture the mother. Research done by Kubista and Kucera in 1974 found that women pregnant for the first time receiving acupuncture for four weeks prior to delivery reached ripening of the cervix more quickly than the control group. These treatments are also excellent for women choosing VBAC or Vaginal Birth after Caesarean. Studies have shown that pre-birth acupuncture helps in these ways:

  • Reduction in medical induction rates
  • Reduction in women receiving epidurals
  • Reduction in emergency caesarean sections
  • Increase in normal vaginal births

Perhaps the most important time for new or experienced moms to receive extra care and nurturing is in the days, weeks, and months after birth. TCM has a long tradition of caring for women at this time. We encourage all of our pregnant women to return to us within two to six weeks of giving birth for at least two acupuncture/moxa sessions. These treatments can speed up and enrich your recovery after labor and delivery.

Common reasons why women seek help in the postpartum: Recovery and wound healing after surgery, insufficient lactation, mastitis, pain, hormonal support, postnatal depression, urinary incontinence.
